If the brain area can be removed in open surgery, this is always the priority. However, a large number of patients with refractory epilepsy, almost two-thirds, are not suitable for open surgery. In this case, a treatment called epilepsy battery can be applied. This process is called vagus nerve stimulation. It is a type of neuromodulation and is used for patients whose seizures continue despite the use of seizure medications. In order for this treatment to be applied, patients must not have a tumor or similar problem in the brain that will cause seizures.
